Senior Friendly Cities - the Case of European Cities

The article concentrates on issues related to adaptation of cities to seniors' needs. Increase in the number of seniors living in cities results from longer lifespans and a demographic slump that leads to higher population share of seniors. According to forecasts presented by the European Commission, population aged 65 plus will double from 87.5 million in 2010 to 152.6 million in 2060 in countries of the European Union. A triple increase may be expected in the population of 80 plus, i.e. from 23.7 million do 62.4 million. Therefore, it is possible to ask a question if at present European cities are organizationally prepared or adapted to provide senior citizens with opportunities of decent functioning in urban areas. Such a situation should make municipal authorities more sensitive to actions that have to be undertaken in order to enable seniors to live comfortably in their urban environments. A part of facilities may be provided within urban logistics projects. The authors decided to analyze readiness of selected European cities to undertake the actions in question by studying development strategies of the cities subject to research. Readiness of the cities to undertake the actions required on the declarative level is compared to identified needs of senior citizens. Considerations presented in the article are rooted in social logistics - a relatively new area of the so-called "non-classical applications of logistics". (fragment of text)
