Celem artykułu jest zbadanie, jak zmieniał się w czasie poziom konkurencji w sektorach bankowych krajów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej (w tym w Czechach, na Węgrzech i w Polsce) oraz w całej grupie krajów UE-12 na tle zmian konkurencji w sektorach bankowych krajów UE-15, w okresie przed kryzysem i podczas kryzysu. Wykorzystując metody pomiaru konkurencji, takie jak statystyka H i indeks Lernera, zbadano, jak zmieniało się nasilenie konkurencji w sektorach bankowych UE przed wybuchem kryzysu finansowego i w trakcie kryzysu, na tle rosnących wskaźników koncentracji. W artykule obok wyników pomiaru konkurencji Banku Światowego oraz wyników L. Weilla , zaprezentowano również wyniki własnych badań na temat konkurencji i koncentracji w polskim sektorze bankowym obejmujące okres przed kryzysem finansowym, jak i podczas kryzysu, oraz wyniki empiryczne pomiaru poziomu konkurencji w sektorach bankowych krajów regionu (Czech oraz Węgier). Odniesiono się tu również do wpływu zjawiska konkurencji w sektorze bankowym na jego stabilność. (fragment tekstu)

The aim of this paper is to present the results of competition in the banking sectors in countries in the region (Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary) as compared to other EU country banking sectors, before the crisis and during the crisis. The article presents the results of own research on competition and concentration in the EU banking sector, covering the period before the financial crisis and during the crisis (empirical studies conducted on data covering the years 1997 to 2012) as well as the results of other authors in relation to banking sectors in EU countries based on the methods of the theory of Industrial Organization Approach of Banking. The paper also addresses the phenomenon of competition between banks and how it affects the stability of the banking sector. The empirical results of the study showed that the level of competition reduced during the crisis in the banking sectors in the region (Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary).(original abstract)
