Aby przedsiębiorstwo mogło konkurować w warunkach uogólnionej niepewności, powinno szybko pozyskiwać nową wiedzę, poszukiwać nowych umiejętności i przewag. Zainteresowanie naukowców i praktyków tymi wspólnotami wynika z faktu, że potrafią one przynieść organizacjom znacznie więcej pożytku niż grupy o bardziej sformalizowanych sposobach działania. In today's complex and highly unpredictable environment the importance of knowledge is recognized and has become a key factor in many organizations. Therefore, the concept of Knowledge Management and within it of communities of practice has found a good ground to flourish. Communities of practice yield short - and long-term benefits to both the organization and the individual community member and they are appropriate - social structures suitable for developing and sharing knowledge in organizations. Communities of practice may differ in attributes such as size, physical boundaries etc., however, they all are characterised by three structural elements: domain of knowledge, community and practice. Communities of practice may function not only in business but also in the society and may include areas such as health, education and others. It's due to the fact that the notion of communities of practice is relevant to any context so long as there is a domain of knowledge to explore and to develop, a community of interacting members and a practice in which they engage.
