The notion of risk is one of the most popular and frequently used terms in scientific considerations, practical applications and colloquial speech. Is it understood well? Is it applied properly? Is it known what risk means? Is its definition formulated in the right way? It seems that in a majority of cases when risk is associated with all activities that are either undertaken or abandoned by human beings, such understanding largely expresses the very nature of risk. Major difficulties are encountered when some attempts are made to provide a formal definition of risk. The problem does not seem minor, especially in the context of considerations on insurances where risk is perceived as one of the fundamental insurance categories that do not only refer to human actions but also to unexpected changes that are of the natural origin. Importance of the problem may be confirmed by the fact that within insurance sciences the Theory of Insurance Risk is distinguished. The theory is a special area of insurance knowledge that deals with all aspects of risk starting form risk philosophy, through defining, classifying, methods of risk quantification and management methods in conditions of risk. It is necessary to highlight that the theory in question - in its parts that concern philosophical aspects - uses achievements of the general theory of risk. Directing the theory of insurance risk towards insurance areas contributed to some modification of interests related to the area of interests in comparison to the general theory of risk (stressing some features that are important for the so called insurance risks in the light of insurance activities). Therefore, the Theory of Insurance Risk pays particular attention to interdependencies that may be observed nowadays. (fragment of text)
