Multimodal Transport Systems ensure flexibility by enabling transport users to select the most appropriate transport mode within the speed pyramide. The real advantage of multimodality appears in situations of unattended disturbances (machine failure, onset of winter, floodwater, strike or risk of penalty for late deliveries). No single transport mode can pretend to have the optimal solution for all types of transport tasks. And no transport object can bear transport costs to an unlimited height. The Annex deals with a widespread misunderstanding: the interchangeable use of the terms 'transport needs' and 'transport demand'.(author's abstract)
