The main purpose of this article was to present the principle of scarcity as one of the main techniques of persuasion commonly used in e-commerce. In the first part of the article the principle of scarcity has been defined and studies indicating its impact on human behavior has been discussed. The principle has been mostly popularized by publication of R. Cialdini, nevertheless, it has been emphasized that the first studies in that topic were conducted in the 70s of the twentieth century. In the following section, the basic techniques and optimal conditions for the principle application has been discussed. It has been emphasized that defense against the principle of scarcity and its influence on human behavior is very difficult. Then, based on different examples, application of the principle in e-commerce has been widely discussed. At the end of the paper, the common application of the principle in e-commerce has been clearly stressed. A clear cognitive gap has been identified, referring to the lack of empirical data on the actual impact of the principle of scarcity on consumer behavior in the Internet. (original abstract)
