This paper aims to continue the theoretical exploration concerning psychological factors that determine and underlie the professional functioning of a nurse. The analysis is based on the assumption that the professional functioning is determined both by external factors and by internal psychological predispositions, specifically by personality traits. What is analysed is the impact of selected personality traits, such as: extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, openness to experience on the professional functioning of a nurse. The problem is to examine the extent to which the professional functioning of a nurse is determined by the personality traits under analysis. The aim is to demonstrate the significance of the psychological predispositions such as personality traits where the professional functioning of a nurse is concerned. The aim may be regarded both as meta-cognitive and practical. First, the results obtained may serve individuals as a meta-cognitive source of information supporting one's personality self-development. Second, they may also be applied in an organizational context since they may enhance both the process of selecting applicants for the nurse profession and that of predicting their professional development(original abstract)
