The purpose of this study is to analyze key characteristics of micro- and macroprudential approaches to supervision regulations in the insurance sector. Analysis of micro- and macroprudential policy instruments reveal common sources but different aims of the instruments. Macroprudential instruments are used to reduce systematic risks, while microprudential instruments are used to provide liquidity and solvency. Bearing in mind the relatively low potential of the insurance sector for risk creation, it seems that macroprudential instruments should be closely connected with microprudential instruments. However, it is the microprudential instruments that need to play the key role. (original abstract)
