Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der in Umberto Eco´s Werk reflektierten moralischen Identität. Umberto Eco gilt als einer der berühmtesten gegenwärtigen Autoren, die sich dem Thema der Moralität und der italienischen Gesellschaft widmen. In diesem Beitrag beschäftigen wir uns genauer gesagt mit der Wahrnehmung der Moralität und Identität in den ausgewählten Werken von U. Eco. Unser primäres Ziel ist Themen als Kampf, Migration und Toleranz, die zu den Eco´s bekanntesten Forschungsfelden gehören, zu rekognoszieren.(original abstract)

Concept of identity has played a pivotal role in the social sciences since the year 1960 [Findor, 2005] when it appeared as a topical issue in this scientific area. According to Barker [2006], the concept of identity has become of prime importance in the field of cultural studies. Each identity (individual) is comprised of several subidentities, e.g. national, cultural-moral etc. Following this point of view, identity is defined as a cultural construct in the area of cultural studies. In the words of Průcha [2010], identity can be defined as a term which determines appurtenance of individual to community with values, norms, rules he/she identifies with. On the one hand, primordial rudiment of identity is connected with social existence of individual (family, mother tongue, nation, race, customs and traditions). On the other hand, instrumental rudiment is connected with individual´s own decision to be a member of a given community and fully accept it. If primordiality is based mostly on emotional basis, then instrumentality is connected with ratio [Bačová, 1997]. The term identity is highly flexible and plastic and we can see quite clearly that it is used in the spectrum of different contexts. According to Jacobs and Maier [1998] identity as well as moral identity has developed in three time periods comprising the past, the present times and future. Moreover, identity can be defined only on the condition that all these different time periods are being respected and taken into account. There exist also borders between identities and they are dependent on individual and his/her will [Assmann, 2012]. As far as an individual feels having or possessing several identities at the same time is based on his/her own individual settings, circumstances and decisions. However, certain doubts have emerged recently in the area of cultural studies concerning the pressing question whether the identity can be supposed to be fixed and firmly defined, or acquired by man freely without set borders. Another question which arises is concerned with mutual connection of these two aspects. Although the origin of the word identity comes from the Latin idem, which means the same, today´s view is that it is more understood in its diversity i.e. linguistic, cultural, national, moral identity etc.(fragment tekstu)
