Introduction. Acceptance of illness is a good predictor of quality of life due to the illness, identified with the sense of satisfaction with life and with an assessment of the current state of health. Purpose of the paper. The purpose of the paper is to recognise and approach to the issues connected with acceptance of illness and satisfaction with life in cancer patients during chemotherapy. Material and methods. The study included 229 cancer patients during chemotherapy in the Department of Clinical Chemotherapy of SP ZOZ MSW (Independent Community Health Care Centre of the Ministry of Interior) with Warmia and Mazury Oncology Centre in Olsztyn from November 2012 to March 2013. The study used the Satisfaction With Life Scale and the Acceptance of Illness Scale. The statistical analysis was performed using Statistica 10 PL computer program. The level of significance p<=0.05 was assumed to be important in order to interpret the hypotheses. Study results. Patients' methods of coping with their illness are different. Satisfaction with life is increased by a higher acceptance of illness and its restrictions. The results of own research indicate that 45.9% of cancer patients highly appreciate their satisfaction with life, while 22.7% of the respondents were characterised by low scores, which indicates a low sense of their accomplishments and achievements. The remaining group of 31.4% had mean sten scores between 5 and 6. The mean sten score for the whole group is 6.08 and it indicates average satisfaction with life of the total number of patients studied. The mean value of overall rates of illness acceptance for all 229 patients is 25.45±8.00 and it indicates a mean level of illness acceptance. Conclusions. An overall level of satisfaction with life in the studied group of cancer patients corresponds with an overall degree of illness acceptance and it is at the mean level.(original abstract)
