The chapter presents theories on the impact of rewards on intrinsic motivation in work environment. The rewards, contrary to the classical psychological theories proved in the past, can decrease the level of intrinsic motivation and lead to replacing the intrinsic motivation with the extrinsic one. They can also cause a decline in job performance and creativity. The experiments that have been the foundation for the discussed theories are presented. The conditions in which rewards can have a positive impact on intrinsic motivation have also been described, together with the types of tasks that make such extrinsic motivation appropriate. Classical and new theories on motivation as well as description of research and experiment and practical conclusions for motivating employees in a organization has been presented.(original abstract)
