Najnowsza wiedza o funkcjonowaniu jednostki w obliczu zagrożenia życia może przyczynić się do opracowania skutecznych metod analizy i oceny stanu ofiar zdarzenia traumatycznego oraz do opracowania adekwatnego i skutecznego systemu pomagania już na miejscu zdarzenia traumatycznego lub zaraz po nim. Situations of our life risk are not common. However, contact with them may be connected with strong stress experience. The events causing such a state are called traumatic events [APA 2000] and the increasing number of research provides with further information of possible responses to be the effect of confrontation with them. In the literature, the said responses are called peritraumatic responses, this is responses occurring during traumatic event or just after [eg. Brunet et al. 2001]. Their two aspects are distinguished here: peritraumatic distress [Brunet et al. 2001] and peritraumatic dissociation [eg. Zoellner, Alvarez-Conrad and Foa 2002].(original abstract)
