In the nutrition zone of the urban administrative province of Łódź there operate 6 sugar factories (Fig. 1). In their number "Dobrzelin", "Ostrowy", and "Leśmierz" belong to the Company "Mazowieckie Sugar Factories", "Gosławice" and ,,Zbiersk" are subordinated to the Company "Wielkopolskie Sugar Factories", while "Wieluń" belongs to the Company "Opolskie Sugar Factories". The main product turned out by sugar factories is white sugar, and its volume and quality of production are largely determined by technological value of the supplied raw material. Despite a substantial amount of sugar beet purchased by the sugar factories, the output of sugar was showing a downward trend over the years 1975- 1978. The main cause of this situation should be sought in gradual reduction of sugar content in beets. "A big amount of the raw material with a low polarization extends the time of the sugar campaign and considerably increases costs of production, which exceeded 16,000 złoty per ton in 1978. The Association of Sugar Producers was dealing with distribution of the product while the size of supplies to particular administrative provinces was regulated by the number of sugar coupons issued to the population. Starting from 1977 the amount of sugar supplied to the market of the Łódź administrative provinces has been quite stable as a rule and amounts to ca. 28,000 ton.(original abstract)
