The purpose of the article is to analyse the professional licensure in light of the requirement to protect the public on one hand and recent liberalization calls due to a new format of service delivery on the other hand. The states institute licensure policies which at minimum should ensure professionalism and ethical standards in rendering services while serving the public good. On other side of the coin, possible overregulation and requiring of unnecessary licensing for some services impact competition and the job market to the detriment of society's welfare. Will the "uberization" of the economy benefit the welfare of the public or will it put the public in danger by relaxing the licensing policies instituted by states too much as a response to the on-demand economy? How to strike a balance between necessary licensing and overburdening, administrative red tape? The article addresses these issues. (original abstract)
