Nanomedicine is a dynamically growing sector of nanotechnology. Nanoscale particles can be used in the therapy and treatment in such areas as medical imaging, rapid diagnostic testing, tissue regeneration, drug carriers and to create entirely new medical products. Financial outlays for research in this area are significant and are expected to increase in the next decade. Among the products used in nanomedicine are liposomes, dendrimers, quantum dots, nanoparticles of metals and their oxides, nanocomposites, carbon materials and nanomaterials of biological origin. This paper attempts to describe the possible use of all nanomaterials in medicine. Properties of nanotechnology products, methods of preparation, the advantages and disadvantages and the current status of the studies on using these materials in different areas of medicine are also described. The authors present the risks associated with the introduction of nanotechnology products to use in medicine. Regulatory aspects of nanotechnology in the European Union are discussed(original abstract)
