Background: Customer driven market and increasing competition mean that companies are increasingly focused on building a strong base of suppliers. Unfortunately, the environment is a source of uncertainty that hampers the realization of the purchasing process, effectively disrupting the functioning of value chains. The aim of the article is to present the issue of uncertainty and an attempt to identify opportunities to deal with it through increasing the flexibility in the area of supply. The article presents the results of the survey, that allowed the identification of the types of environmental uncertainty accompanying purchases in the B2B market and present them for different segments of companies, including different sectors. Methods: A two-phase methodology design based on literature review and survey was used. The postal survey allowed to gather unique data from 182 companies operating in the B2B market. Results: The research results indicate that companies most often feel pressure to reduce costs and thus the need to look for cheaper sources of purchase. Subsequently, they identify the uncertainty associated with fluctuations in commodity prices and currency fluctuations. Conclusion: Companies identify different types of uncertainty accompanying purchases in the B2B market, regardless the industry. However, the greater awareness in this area have the companies operating in international supply chains. It confirms that the international environment is more dynamic and challenging. Increasing the flexibility of the supply chain is one of the directions of mitigating the environmental uncertainty for the relationship with suppliers. (original abstract)
