The idea of technology assessment (technology assessment - ТА) has been developing since the early 60s on the background of the growing interest of the societies in environmental issues. Technology assessment, in particular concerning environmental aspects, is in line with the concept of sustainable development. The strategy of technology assessing has evolved over more than 40 years. It was the subject of criticism from researchers representing different fields, in particular social sciences. Various trends of ТА emerged and the scope and aims were changed. In the article there are presented selected instruments of technology assessment with the particular emphasis on Life cycle assessment (LCA). (original abstract)
