The spatial distribution of Portugal with regard to its development level - economic development level, depopulation level and demography of the inhabitants - is highly differentiated. Apart from highly developed regions (in the coastal zone) there are also poorly developed ones - particularly rural areas in the continental zone, which represent poor economic development, are depopulated and mainly people who are approaching their retirement age live there. The main goal of the paper is to show a significant dependence between life quality and local development of regions in the light of economic crisis and fiscal policy of the country being the result of the crisis, the effects of which can be observed, among others, in the scope of health and public management. The presented research results have confirmed the existence of such a dependency. (original abstract)
