Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie ekonomicznej i społecznej interpretacji wyników referendum zorganizowanego w czerwcu 2016 r. w sprawie dalszego członkostwa Wielkiej Brytanii w Unii Europejskiej. Wstępne analizy sugerują, że przestrzenne zróżnicowanie wyników referendum można do pewnego stopnia wytłumaczyć różnicami w czynnikach rozwoju społeczno-ekonomicznego poszczególnych regionów Wielkiej Brytanii. The aim of the article is to present the economic and social interpretation to the results of the European Union membership referendum held in the United Kingdom in June 2016. The article argues that the victory of the Leave campaign can be traced down to structural problems of the UK economy, i.a. the loss of international competitiveness, deindustrialisation, underinvestment and social inequality, that were blamed in the political discourse on the EU membership. Preliminary analysis suggests that to some extent the heterogeneity of the referendum results at the regional level can be explained by heterogeneity in economic and social factors.
