2007 saw the outbreak of a global financial crisis, which originated in the United States. One of its major triggers was the increasing global payment imbalances in the preceding decade. The disturbances in financial markets initially affected only developed economies, and some economists expected that developing countries would not suffer from the crisis. These expectations, however, turned out to be short-lived. The recession in developed countries - the major target markets for the Asian production - suppressed the demand for exports supplied by this group of countries thus leading to an economic slowdown in the region. The effects of the global financial crisis revealed the weakness of one of the main foundations of the Asian growth model, mainly its overdependence on exports to developed Western markets. Even though the export-led strategy had up till then been a great success in this group of countries, in the last decade it posed risk to both the region and the entire global economy. It led to an extremely high dependence of Asia's economic growth on the global demand and generated imbalances, more precisely surpluses, in current accounts of their balances of payments. This in turn was the main trigger to the build-up of global payment imbalances, and has led to heated discussions among economists and politicians about what changes should be introduced to the Asian economic policies to maintain a stable economic growth and reduce the imbalances in the global economy.(fragment of text)

W dotychczasowej strategii rozwoju krajów azjatyckich w trzecim rozdziale przedstawiono dotychczasową strategię rozwoju krajów azjatyckich oraz konieczność jej zmiany, tak by w przyszłości sprzyjała utrzymaniu stabilnego wzrostu gospodarczego w tych krajach i ograniczeniu nierównowagi zewnętrznej w gospodarce światowej. W pierwszej części przedstawiono dotychczasową, proeksportową strategię wzrostu gospodarczego krajów azjatyckich, w drugiej - skutki globalnego kryzysu finansowego dla krajów azjatyckich, a w trzeciej - ryzyko, jakie wiąże się z dalszą realizacją proeksportowej strategii rozwoju, oraz konieczność przejścia tej grupy krajów do nowego modelu rozwoju, w którym większą rolę odgrywałby popyt wewnętrzny. W ostatniej części rozdziału przedstawiono znaczenie azjatyckich rynków finansowych w modyfikacji dotychczasowego modelu rozwoju.(abstrakt oryginalny)
