The enlargement of the European Union (EU) in May 2004 was in its dimension a historical and unprecedented event in the process of European integration. In the largest single expansion, ten new Member States (NMS) - including eight countries of Central and Eastern Europe - found themselves in a new economic environment. Their admission to the status of a full EU membership was preceded by the implementation of a strategy based on economic and institutional openness on Community structures. An important part of these measures represented the Trade and Cooperation Agreements concluded between the European Community and the future new Member States in the early 90's. The following steps were the Association Agreements, of which particular parts concerning the trade exchange came into effect in the Central and Eastern European countries still before their application for EU membership. A broadly based adjustment process and a tightening cooperation resulted in a progressive deepening of integration already during the pre-accession stage. (fragment of text)

W maju 2005 roku nastąpiło największe rozszerzenie w dotychczasowym procesie integracji, w ramach którego osiem państw Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej stało się członkami Unii Europejskiej. Minione pięć lat członkostwa jest zatem okazją do sformułowania pierwszych wniosków dotyczących bilansu zmian zachodzących w gospodarkach omawianego regionu. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest przedstawienie głównych tendencji w zakresie stopnia i charakteru rezultatów udziału nowych państw członkowskich w poszczególnych wymiarach Rynku Wewnętrznego. W tym kontekście, szczególną uwagę zwrócono na tendencje w handlu zagranicznym i bezpośrednie inwestycje zagraniczne. Omówiono również postęp integracji finansowej nowych państw członkowskich oraz realizację zasady swobodnego przepływu pracowników między nowymi i dotychczasowymi państwami UE po 2004 roku.(abstrakt oryginalny)
