Abstrakty

Na drodze ku zobiektywizowanemu, a przy tym pozytywnemu myśleniu o starości zbyt często spotykamy jednowymiarowe, biegunowego postrzeganie zarówno procesu starzenia się, jak i samych seniorów - albo traktuje się i prezentuje starość oraz starzenie się jako dramat jednostkowy, czas przepojony cierpieniem i beznadzieją, okres analizowany wyłącznie przez pryzmat deficytów i patologii, kosztów utrzymania, leczenia i opieki najstarszego pokolenia (zmedykalizowane obrazy starości), albo też przekaz zdominowany jest zbyt optymistycznymi modelami starości, przypominającymi swoiste manifesty charakterystyczne dla grup mniejszościowych, co niezbyt służy obiektywizacji położenia i potencjału seniorów (wersja często spotykana wśród aktywnych społecznie ludzi starszych i/lub organizacji seniorskich). Oba te sposoby prezentowania starzenia się i starości niezbyt nadają się do budowania programów promocyjno-profilaktycznych warunkujących poprawę/utrzymanie jakości życia w ostatniej fazie życia człowieka - artykuł uzasadnia sensowność i konieczność włączenia do programów prewencyjnych także działań pozazdrowotnych adresowanych również do innych kategorii społecznych niż seniorzy, lokując je w szerszym kontekście polityki społecznej wobec starości i ludzi starych. When shaping an objective, but at the same time positive way of thinking of the old-age, one often comes across a one-dimensional perception of the aging process and problem of senior citizens, where the old age is either seen as a personal drama and a time of nothing else but suffering and hopelessness, which is then analysed entirely from the point of view of deficits, pathology, maintenance issues and health care (medicalisation of old age), or it is a picture dominated by over-optimistic models of old age living styles which are more a resemblance of manifests characteristic of minority groups. The latter by no means serves to achieve an objective view of the actual position and potential of the elderly citizens (but is a view often presented by active senior citizens or their organisations). Neither of the two ways of presenting the issues of aging and the old age may be suitably used for building prevention or supporting programmes aimed at improving the quality of living in the last stage of a human's life. The conclusions presented in the paper justify the necessity of including in such prevention programmes other activities, not necessarily only health-related. They also postulate addressing such activities to other social categories as well, thus placing them in a broader context of social policy directed at the elderly citizens and aging.
