This paper contributes to the development of a stronger conceptual basis for the study of tourism distribution by presenting a generalized model emphasizing the needs of tourists and the functions required to meet those needs. The model is developed by synthesizing and reinterpreting a large body of empirical findings from New Zealand in the light of the fundamental principles of distribution drawn from the wider literature. It is structured around the needs, expressed in terms of time, place, form and possession utilities, of three segments - independent, customized and package tourists - and the functions undertaken by suppliers, intermediaries and the tourists themselves in three locations: in the market, en route and at the destination.
