This paper intends to contribute to the empirical analysis of the regional economic convergence and employment performance of Italy and Poland. The two countries present the highest levels of diversification, respectively, between the old members and new EU Countries. A first part of analysis deals with beta convergence between the 36 Polish and Italian regions, using non-parametric techniques. The goal of this analysis is to evaluate and discuss the different dynamics of regional per capita GDP in order to identify common patterns of development. A second empirical analysis is realized comparing the regional labour markets paying particular attention to the quantitative objectives of the European Employment Strategy. In order to evaluate and compare similarities and differences between the 36 regions, a cluster analysis is done using the multivariate statistical techniques. The database is made up of two sets of information: (i) those concerning the basic regional labour markets features: employment and unemployment rates and (ii) those describing the sector composition of employment (NACE 1 sector classification). In the final section the main result and some policy implications are briefly presented. (original abstract)
