The aim this article is to study the newest methodologies of project management for software projects, especially the so called agile methodologies. These projects have a number of particularities that make them different from other engineering projects. The most important issue is that projects are labor intensive, the environment evolves rapidly and there is usually a poor scope definition. Consequently, these methodologies have to manage these troubles and get the project finished on time, cost and quality. New management approaches are emerging in this field. In this paper it will be analyzed the characteristics of the most used agile methodologies, comparing them to each other using as a comparison metric the areas of knowledge of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).
