The main purpose of this chapter is to outline the role and importance of communication in two selected Central and East Europe countries. In that framework, this paper addresses communication style from the viewpoint of formality vs informality of communication among members of organizations. Based on assumptions about the differences between Slovenian and Austrian culture clusters, we postulated the hypothesis that communication style in Austrian organizations is more formal than in Slovenian organizations. In order to test the hypothesis, we conducted a research among managers in Austrian and Slovenian organizations. Based on 208 answers from Slovenian and 196 from Austrian managers, the main cognition is that communication between members in Austrian organizations is more formal than in Slovenian organizations. These findings are useful for managers and other members of organizations in order to become familiar with communication style in two neighborhood countries. Findings also provide an important starting point for better preparation for cross-cultural communication and overall collaboration. (original abstract)
