As the discussion of e-learning and its related research progresses, researchers continue to study the effectiveness of online higher education. Those who critique online teaching and learning indicate that there is a potential disconnect between the instructor and the students, as well as among the students (Reese, 2015, pp. 579-588), because of the limited amount or non-existence of face-to-face contact. As a result, both online students and teachers may be left feeling a lack of engagement and interaction at times. To mitigate this potentiality, online teachers must use a variety of teaching, assessment and design methods that facilitate engagement and learning.(original abstract)
