The sheer size and scope of the Internet has had a tremendous impact on municipalities around the world. Local governments initially saw the Internet as a simple repository of information that could be used to distribute information to the public. That perspective evolved into what has become a complex system of tools that local governments can leverage, to not only enhance the distribution of information to the public, but also to provide a whole host of opportunities that both the public and business sectors can use to engage interactively with local government.(original abstract)
