Wykorzystano w niej dane uzyskane w Kirgistanie w latach 2007 i 2008, w oparciu o wywiady z krajowymi i zagranicznymi interesariuszami oraz lokalne zasoby literaturowe

Warianty tytułu
Using a case study of the Kumtor gold mine in the Kyrgyz Republic, this article compares the national i gross benefits related to resource extraction with the potential benefits related to other ecosystem services that the same area could provide had mining not been initiated (the opportunity costs of gold mining). Had the mine not been created, its present area could have been used for ecotourism, hunting, cottage industry and pastoralism. Further benefits could be generated had international stakeholders been willing to pay for the protection of rare species living in this area. Important services are also received by those living downstream and using water originating from near to the mine (it is located close to the sources of the Syr-Darya).
