The author analyses the role of functional strategies in the management of a general educational institution. One particular aspect considered in the article is strategic management (governance) in the field of general secondary education. The author describes a model of the manager's actions aimed at identifying problems in the functioning of a school, the ability to formulate clear goals regarding the school's development, which requires the formulation of an appropriate strategy, the ability to develop the school's long-term strategic development plan; the ability to involve participants of the educational process in the implementation of the strategic plan; the ability to carry out the strategic plan using appropriate means; the ability to make changes and adjustments in the adopted strategy, the ability to analyze and identify positive and negative aspects of the strategy and the ability to modify the future strategy taking into account the mistakes of the past.
