Information Ambiguity as a Source of Risk in Project Management : An Exploratory Study of Family Businesses

This papers responds to a number of researchers' calls regarding expanding knowledge on different aspects of the functioning of family-owned enterprises. The study asks the research question whether, and to what extent, family businesses identify risk related to the ambiguity of information from the external environment in the context of its influence on projects they manage. The results indicate that family involvement and business characteristics are not correlated with ambiguity of information which is sent to companies by their external environment. However ambiguity of information correlates significantly with the business sector, especially 'Wholesale, retail trade, repair and repair of motorcycles', 'Financial and insurance activities' and 'Other service activities'. The results direct the attention of the owners and managers of family firms towards externally generated risks and the impact they might have on business activities. (original abstract)
