Development of Quality and Risk Management in Patient Safety

Objective: The objective of this article is to describe a historical context of patient safety, a problematic pursuit of its improvement and to familiarize non-medical professionals especially in quality and risk management with the growing potential of the field in health care. Patient safety is a fundamental principle of health care according to World Health Organization and it has been a part of health care since ancient times. However, it is the last decades that have seen an evolution in its status to a global priority and growing confidence that patient safety is as important for healthcare systems as new medical technologies, skills, knowledge or pharmaceuticals. Its history is an intriguing journey into the fields of history, behavioral science, management, law and even aviation or insurance that helped develop quality and risk management tools and policies.
