The purpose of the article is to analyse the views of Vasyl Sukhomlynsky, a wellknown Ukrainian humanistic educator and director of the Pavlyshchyna comprehensive school, concerning the management of educational activity in his school. The author demonstrates that the management system created by Sukhomlynsky was based on a humanistic approach to the child and ideas of the philosophy of love and respect, with special emphasis on socio-pedagogical aspects, the child-centred approach, and the principles of democracy and humanism. The analysis indicates that in contrast to the view of the child existing in 1950s and 1960s, Sukhlominsky's approach promoted a holistic image of the child, which includes knowledge about the child's development, his strengths and natural talents. The author shows that for Sukhlominsky, who works at the interface of pedagogical theory and practice, the most important thing is to get to know the child. (original abstract)
