Abstrakty

Przedmiotem artykułu jest analiza używania metafory w tłumaczeniu pojęć konfucjańskich na języki zachodnie. Na podstawie przykładów tłumaczenia i interpretowania nauk konfucjańskich przez myślicieli zachodnich oraz chińskich zostaje wykazane, że metafora odgrywała istotną rolę w propagowaniu określonej interpretacji konfucjanizmu. Na przykład metaforyczne nazwanie nauk Konfucjusza "filozofią" przez misjonarzy jezuickich pomagało im w propagowaniu tezy, że konfucjanizm stanowi rodzaj racjonalistycznej filozofii, która może być pogodzona z wyznawaniem wiary katolickiej. Inaczej mówiąc poprzez odwołanie się do rozmaitych metafor przywoływani w artykule myśliciele sprawiali, że ich własne poglądy na temat tego czym jest konfucjanizm, stawały się bardziej przekonujące dla zachodnich czytelników i nie pozwalały im w pełni zauważyć odrębności myśli chińskiej. Z drugiej jednak strony, gdyby ich nie było, myśl ta byłaby dla nich bardziej niezrozumiała, co stanowiłoby przeszkodę w rozwoju komunikacji międzykulturowej.(abstrakt oryginalny)

The article is concerned with the use of metaphor in translation of Confucian ideas into Western languages. On the basis of different examples of translation, and interpretation of Confucian teachings by Western and Chinese thinkers, it is argued that the use of metaphor played an important role in propagation of different understandings of Confucianism. Each of the analyzed thinkers, while introducing Confucian ideas to the Western public, used some metaphors to interpret them in the way which was beneficial to his own view on the question about the main characteristics of Confucianism. This practice had an ambivalent result, because on one hand, Western readers could not distinguish the original Confucian ideas from their specific interpretation, which emerged in the translation process. On the other hand, the use of metaphors made Chinese thought more accessible to them, and in this way nurtured for the dialog between Chinese and Western Culture.(original abstract)
