The general approach to achieving the desired body weight of an athlete relies on the energy balance concept. The body weight is constant if the amount of consumed energy is equal to the amount of expended energy. Retaining the existing body weight. The aim of retaining the body weight is to maintain the energy balance. The section discusses the procedure adopted in that case, which consists of the assessment of the normal way of eating and level of physical activity; the determination of the energy demand and the analysis of its use; the determination of the appropriate composition of nutrients in the diet; the development of the individual strategy to achieve the goal - retaining the existing body weight; weekly monitoring of the stability of the body weight. Reducing the body weight. If the aim is to reduce the body weight, a negative energy balance must be achieved. The reduction in energy uptake may worsen the functional indices due to factors, such as the reduction of the energy reserves, the impairment of immunologic functions, disorders in mood and enzymatic activity, as well as changes in the structure of muscles (Walberg-Rankin, 1998). The article discusses in detail the standard procedure adopted in that case. Increasing the body weight. To increase his/her body weight, the athlete should exist in the state of a positive energy balance. The attention is normally focused on the fatless body mass increase, though some athletes need to increase their total body weight. The article discusses in detail the standard procedure adopted in that case. (original abstract)
