The subject of analysis in this article is the question of mutual relationship between modern migration and religion. Author tries to provide an insight into the ongoing discussions about migration and the role of religion in changing modern world. Like other forms of people's activity migration may be viewed as an social phenomenon or from the perspective of the individual. In both cases, the analysis of its connection with religion may shed some light on motivations of the decision to move or to stay, preferences among alternative locations, patterns and trends of behavior in the place of destination, and how they lead to changes in the religion itself. The paper attempts to answer how religious identity and symbolic ethnicity influence migration and the coexistence of different migrant groups with their different religious lifestyles. As the coexistence of different religions does inevitably lead to challenges they cannot be separated from the issues of freedom of conscience, religious practices and observance of law in the country of destination which sets the limits of religious tolerance.
