The term "economic refugee" was frequently raised during the extensive debate around migration crisis. The purpose of this article was the attempt to answer the questions what is the phenomenon of the inflow of economic refugees and does this phenomenon occur in the EU migration crisis? In order to answer these questions, the analysis of the literature and statistical analysis were conducted. The main conclusion of the analysis is that the phenomenon of the inflow of economic refugees is self-limiting, and migrants, who have not received refugee status (under the Geneva Convention) in the EU do not come from countries affected significantly by extreme poverty, therefore, they belong to the category of economic migrants.
