Introduction. The persistent high incidence of civilization diseases, including can- cer, prompts numerous research teams to look for their causes, methods of prevention and effective therapeutic measures. In recent years, selenium has become more and more popular as a naturally occurring component with the potential to reduce carcinogenesis processes. Objective. The aim of this work is to indicate in the management of prophylaxis and treatment of human cancers the influence of selenium (Se) as an important element that reduces the risk of cancer. Description. The level of selenium in the blood serum is an indicator of high risk: lung cancer, la- ryngeal cancer, colon cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, as well as breast and ovarian cancer. There is a strong relationship between selenium and the incidence of cancer. Nume- rous studies conducted in Poland and around the world have shown a strong correlation between selenium concentration and cancer risk. The lower the concentration, the greater the risk of getting sick. This applies to the most common cancers, such as lung cancer, colon cancer and pancreas. Summary. In many clinical and experimental studies carried out nationally and interna- tionally, evidence has been gathered clearly indicating the important role played by selenium (Se) in prevention and treatment, especially of cancer.
