The paper discusses the emissions scandal in Volkswagen AG, its origins and repercussions. It focuses on the issues of corporate governance and public relations examining the role of the latter in the situation. We argue public relations should have been involved in the strategie decision-making process in Volkswagen Group but we ąuestion the extent, if any, of its impact on the executives. The paper does not discuss fuli details of the situation as we do not intend to examine every decision of the company and reaction of publics. Press coverage, market reactions and consumer bechaviour are not being dealt with here as we put public relations in its managing role and presume it is being executed at the level of company's management, not only marketing or promotional ones. We also ask if and how can public relations contribute to dealing with the crisis in a further perspective and what its role should be. The paper concems principles of corporate govemance and ąuestions if they have been followed by the executives of Volkswagen Group. We gathered information about the crisis and particular actions from credible media and compared it with theoretical knowledge to outline the corporate governance and public relations policies developed and implemented by VW. The paper aims to study the idea of public relations being used in the process of corporate governance as authors hardly place both issues within a com- mon context. (fragment of text)
