Analysis of the subject literature reveals that there are three schools of thought on the impact of dividend payments on shareholder value: neutral, pro-dividend and anti- -dividend. However, after several decades of debate, research and analyses, there is still no consensus as to whether or not the dividend affects shareholder value. In the light of this lack of agreement, this work aims to fill the research gap and, in particular, to analyse the impact of the dividend on the value of the so-called market measures of created value. Two additional sub-goals are considered. The conceptual aim of this research was to organise and present the state of knowledge on dividend policy, shareholder value and the impact of dividend payments on company value. The research goal, however, was to empirically verify the impact of given dividend events as well as the amount of dividends paid on shareholder value as measured by the so-called market measures of created value. The analysis of the literature, which mainly covers research on the impact of dividend payments on shareholder value, brought four research problems to light. They have been reduced to the following questions: 1. Does the payment of the dividend affect shareholder value and, in particular, is the impact positive, negative or neutral? 2. Do changes in the dividend amount affect shareholder value? 3. Does the continuity of dividend payments affect shareholder value? 4. Does the amount of the dividend paid affect shareholder value? The research goals and problems make the work theoretical and application-oriented with the use of empirical illustration. The work consists of six chapters. The first chapter introduces the dividend and includes, among other issues, definitions of the concept of dividend, characteristics of global tendencies in the field of dividend payments and a discussion of dividend policies. The second chapter assesses trends in the payment of dividends on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW) in the years 2001-2014. The third chapter presents the meaning of value as an economic category, as well as the notion of "shareholder value," the measures of which are defined and characterised. The fourth chapter presents an assessment and examines the dispersion of shareholder value on the GPW in the years 2001-2014. The fifth chapter examines and arranges, within the framework of views of dividend schools, the main empirical studies devoted to the impact of dividend payments on shareholder value. The extent to which market measures of shareholder value explain this value are likewise here assessed. The sixth and final chapter contains the results of empirical research on the impact of the dividend on shareholder value on the GPW in the years 2001-2014. This work weighs in on a multi-year discussion of the impact of dividend payments on shareholder value. In particular, it strives to show that the views of the pro-dividend school prove superior in Polish capital market conditions. The results obtained in the work have confirmed this assumption. They have confirmed that in the period audited, in the case of domestic companies listed on the GPW, the dividend generally had a significant positive impact on shareholder value, even if for all cases and all measures it did not. On the one hand, F. Black's (1976) words seem prescient here, "The harder we look at the dividend picture, the more it seems like a puzzle, with pieces that just don't fit together". On the other hand, however, analysis has shown that the nine measures of the equity value creation (EVC) index prove statistically significant. Thus, the EVC index is a measure of value whose level is the most susceptible to dividends and, at the same time, clearly indicates the positive impact of dividends on shareholder value.
