Analysis of Wine Tourism Development: Tendencies and Perspectives in Varna Region

The aim of this study is to analyze the conditions of wine tourism in Varna region in order to point out some challenges and tendencies. The paper reviews the vine growing and wine production in Bulgarian territories and in Varna region in particular, in relation to wine tourism opportunities for development. Revealed are some specific aspects that play a key role in the wine tourism development. The fact, that the wine tourism development found only recently its place in the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism is evaluated as a challenge. At the same time, it is underlined that both - the wine production and wine tourism possess the potential to add value to the individuality of the local tourism development. The most common challenges for the wine tourism are brought in focus, together with the solutions for improving the future growth of the wine tourism in Varna region. Discussed are the perspectives of combining wine tourism with other types of tourism in order to reinforce the opportunities for its development. With this paper, the authors try to provoke further discussion on the presented problems because of the importance of wine tourism for the national economy. (original abstract)
