In this article our remarks regarding Francis and economic affairs derive principally from his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si' and his comments, also in 2015, at the Second World Meeting of Popular Movements in Santa Cruz Bolivia. They are centered on the following seven topics: self-love (self-interest), common good, justice and charity, community and individuality, human action and human personality, natural environment, and land/lodging/labor. We have a particular interest in Francis's remarks on the natural environment and his three "Ls" - land/lodging/labor - that he asserted with great emphasis in Santa Cruz. In this regard, we call attention to his omission of a fourth "L" - liberty (freedom) that John Paul II addressed in the most positive terms. By re-affirming the three "Ls", Francis's remarks at Santa Cruz provide important insights into his thinking on economic affairs not just in Latin America but across the entire world. Consequently, our remarks on land/lodging/labor and freedom are more extensive than on the other five subjects. As to John Paul's views on the same seven subjects, we rely heavily on his encyclicals Laborem Exercens (1981), Sollicitudo Rei Socialis (1987), and Centesimus Annus (1991). We discovered that Francis and John Paul II agree on the importance of protecting the natural environment and that the common good is based on the virtue of solidarity and the preferential option for the poor. However, there are differences between Francis and John Paul II on self-interest, community and individuality, and the market system. Those differences appear to be even deeper with regard to self-realization through human action in economic affairs and economic freedom. There is more agreement between Francis and John Paul II on the topics covered herein than we expected to find. Even so, the differences are serious and likely to be confusing to the laity as to where the Church stands on economic affairs, and divisive in that different factions within the Church will find in Francis or John Paul II arguments to support their divergent claims. Uwagi dotyczące papieża Franciszka i jego postawy wobec spraw gospodarczych, ujęte w niniejszym artykule, wywodzą się głównie z jego encykliki Laudato Si' z 2015r. oraz jego komentarzy, także z 2015r., wygłoszonych podczas II Światowego Spotkania Ruchów Ludowych w Santa Cruz w Boliwii. Koncentrują się one na następujących siedmiu tematach: miłość własna (interes własny), dobro wspólne, sprawiedliwość i dobroczynność, wspólnota i indywidualność, działania ludzkie i osobowość ludzka, środowisko naturalne oraz ziemia/zakwaterowanie/praca. Szczególnie interesują nas rozważania Franciszka na temat środowiska naturalnego i jego trzech "L" - ziemi (land)/zakwaterowania (loging)/pracy (labour) - które niezwykle silnie podkreślał w Santa Cruz. W tym względzie zwracamy uwagę na jego pominięcie czwartego "L" - wolności (liberty), do której Jan Paweł II odwoływał się w bardzo pozytywny sposób. Aprobując trzy "L", rozważania Franciszka w Santa Cruz dostarczają ważnych informacji na temat jego sposobu myślenia o sprawach gospodarczych nie tylko w Ameryce Łacińskiej, ale na całym świecie. W związku z tym nasze uwagi na temat ziemi/zakwaterowania/pracy i wolności są bardziej obszerne niż dla pozostałych pięciu kwestii. Jeśli chodzi o poglądy Jana Pawła II w obszarze tych siedmiu tematów, polegamy w dużej mierze na jego encyklikach Laborem Exercens (1981), Sollicitudo Rei Socialis (1987) i Centesimus Annus (1991). Odkryliśmy, że Franciszek i Jan Paweł II zgadzają się co do znaczenia ochrony środowiska naturalnego oraz że dobro wspólne opiera się na cnocie solidarności i stworzeniu preferencyjnych możliwości dla ubogich. Istnieją jednak różnice między Franciszkiem a Janem Pawłem II dotyczące interesu własnego, wspólnoty i indywidualności oraz systemu rynkowego. Różnice te wydają się być jeszcze głębsze w odniesieniu do samorealizacji poprzez ludzkie działanie w sprawach gospodarczych i wolności gospodarczej. Znaleźliśmy więcej zgodności między poglądami Franciszka i Jana Pawła II na tematy poruszane w niniejszym artykule, niż się spodziewaliśmy. Mimo to różnice są poważne i mogą być mylące dla osób świeckich, jeśli chodzi o stanowisko Kościoła w sprawach gospodarczych. Mogą one również stwarzać podziały, ponieważ różne frakcje w Kościele znajdą w argumentach Franciszka lub Jana Pawła II poparcie dla swoich rozbieżnych twierdzeń. Kto pogodzi te różnice?
