The aim of this article is a brief presentation of the U.S. attitude towards the Arctic in the last two decades, ending in the year 2015. It is also to describe the expectations as regards the assumption of the chairmanship in the Arctic Council as well as the reasons which so far rendered the ratification of the basic instrument in governing the Arctic (UNCLOS) impossible for the United States. For a variety of reasons, described in the article, the Arctic has remained an afterthought only in the policy of this country, with the exception of the period of Cold War when much attention had been paid to the region. The U.S. has been called a "reluctant" Arctic country by some, and not many of its citizens realize to this day it is one. The new U.S. National Strategy for the Arctic Region announced by the White House, along with the chairmanship in the Arctic Council in the years 2015-2017, seems to provide an important impulse for intensifying the U.S. activity in the Arctic as well as the hope for ratifying UNCLOS by this country. Celem artykułu jest skrótowe przedstawienie stanowiska Stanów Zjednoczonych wobec Arktyki na przestrzeni ostatnich dwóch dekad, do roku 2015. Równie ważne wydają się być oczekiwania dotyczące przejęcia przez USA przewodnictwa w Radzie Arktycznej w tym roku oraz przyczyny, które jak dotąd uniemożliwiły temu krajowi ratyfikację podstawowego instrumentu prawnego, jakim jest Konwencja Narodów Zjednoczonych o prawie morza (UNCLOS). Z racji bardzo wielu powodów, omawianych w tym artykule, Arktyka stanowiła istotny rejon zainteresowania USA w okresie Zimnej Wojny, a następnie kraj ten poświęcał jej już zdecydowanie mniej uwagi. Niewielu Amerykanów wydaje się wiedzieć, iż ich kraj jest państwem arktycznym, a tylu samo jest zainteresowanych przynależnością USA i działalnością w ramach Rady Arktycznej. Nowa strategia dotycząca Arktyki ogłoszona przez Biały Dom oraz przewodnictwo USA w Radzie Arktycznej na lata 2015-2017 zdaje się stanowić istotny impuls dla działań USA na rzecz Arktyki wraz z rosnącą nadzieją na ratyfikację przez ten kraj UNCLOS.
