This paper analyses how institutions and institutional complementarities affect innovation systems. While the Varieties of Capitalism (VoC) approach tends to concentrate on institutional complementarities, economic globalization exerts pressures on national innovation systems which are classifiable in the Varieties of Capitalism 'VoC' pattern. To explore the influence of national institutions and national institutional complementarities on the national innovation system this paper analyses data from 16 countries. It reveals a significant diversity in terms of how different institutions structure economic behaviour. Liberal market economies (LMEs) depend on massive expenditures of the US-led armaments industry, while coordinated market economies (CMEs) hinge on human capital. Finally, experiences from research on venture capital in liberal and coordinated market economies reveals different levels of integration which are responsible for the LME's and CME's patent performance.(original abstract)

W artykule analizuje się, jak instytucje i ich komplementarność wpływają na systemy innowacji. Podczas gdy podejście Odmian Kapitalizmu (VOC - Varieties of Capitalism) zmierza ku koncentrowaniu się na komplementarności instytucji, globalizacja gospodarcza wywiera presję na krajowe systemy innowacji, które są sklasyfikowane jako wzorzec Odmian Kapitalizmu. W celu zbadania wpływu instytucji krajowych i komplementarności instytucjonalnych na krajowe systemy innowacji, artykuł ten zawiera analizę danych z 16 krajów. Ujawniona została znacząca różnorodność w kwestii, jak różne instytucje wpisują się w strukturę zachowań ekonomicznych. Liberalne gospodarki rynkowe (Liberal Makret Economies - LMEs) zależą od dużych wydatków prowadzonego przez Stany Zjednoczone przemysłu zbrojeniowego, podczas gdy skoordynowane gospodarki rynkowe (CMEs - Coordinated Market Economies) zależą od kapitału ludzkiego. Ostatecznie, doświadczenia z badań nad kapitałem podwyższonego ryzyka (venture capital) w liberalnych i skoordynowanych gospodarkach rynkowych ujawniają różne poziomy integracji, które są odpowiedzialne za wydajność liberalnych i skoordynowanych gospodarek rynkowych.(abstrakt oryginalny)
