The Internet as Seen by Metropolitan Non-users

Abstrakty
Dla problemu cyfrowych nierówności istotne znaczenie ma motywacja do użytkowania Internetu, która jest związana z postrzeganiem tego medium. Celem badania przeprowadzonego za pomocą zogniskowanych wywiadów grupowych i technik projekcyjnych wśród osób niekorzystających z Internetu była rekonstrukcja tego obrazu. Wyniki pokazują, że non-userzy mieszkający w dużych miastach mają sporą wiedzę o Internecie, który jest stałym elementem ich życia codziennego. Często w zdobyciu informacji korzystają z pomocy internautów. Postrzegają Internet jako narzędzie wyszukiwania informacji, lecz obawiają się trudności związanych z jego użytkowaniem, techniki projekcyjne ukazały, że dla badanych non-userów Internet jest przestrzenią zimną emocjonalnie, w której kontakt międzyludzki jest bezosobowy. Digital divide raises the question of non-users' lack of motivation for going online. This is deeply connected with an image of the Internet as seen by non-users. Article presents key findings of research conducted among two groups of non-users. Research methods applied were focus interviews and projection techniques. Study shows that non-users seen internet as a part of their every-day life and have broad knowledge of the online world. They often benefits from users, who help them in gaining information from the internet. Non-users perceive internet as a useful tool for finding information, but worry about difficulties in use. Projection techniąues showed, that for interviewed non-users internet was space of emotional cold, in which human interactions are impersonal. (original abstract)
