Business process management systems (BPMS) used in organizations today are characterized by the lack of adequate flexibility and speed to adapt to dynamic changes in the business processes' environment. Agent-oriented technology, through the use of autonomous software agents, can overcome these disadvantages. The article presents the characteristics of traditional BPM systems, discusses the advantages of agent technology, and points out the benefits of its use in agent-oriented business process management systems.
