Józef Orczyk, a citizen of Greater Poland, has just turned eighty. Born on January 4, 1940, he grew up and went to schools in the town of Śrem near Poznań, Poland. Starting with the year 1957 he took up studies at the universities of Poznań. Over the years 1957-1963 he studied at the Philosophy and History Department of Adam Mickiewicz University. There, after submitting his thesis entitled "Grain Production in Greater Poland in 1929-1939" and passing the relevant examinations, he was awarded the degree of Master of History and subsequently Master of Pedagogy. He continued his studies over the years 1962-1965 at the Economics Department of the then WSE School of Economics where his thesis "The Agrarian System in Poland in 1929-1935" gained him a Master's degree in Economics. [...] What is of particular value is the wide range of Professor Józef Orczyk's research topics. It is an expression of an interdisciplinary approach to complex categories, phenomena, and socio-economic processes, which is crucial in teaching at university level. At the same time, it is an effective antidote to excessive one-sided focus on economic disciplines. Professor Orczyk deserves the gratitude of thousands of university graduates for his many years of work in the academic environment. Their education was driven to a greater or lesser extent by his professional and social activities, and ultimately by his very human kindness, which should be emphasized with due force.
