Abstrakty

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zjawiska wycieczek po slumsach miast krajów tzw. Globalnego Południa, które od początku lat 90-tych XX wieku stają się coraz bardziej popularne wśród osób odwiedzających, pochodzących w szczególności z krajów tzw. Globalnej Północy na przykładzie wycieczek po Kiberze, w Kenii. W latach 2014-2016 prowadziłam badania etnograficzne, których celem był antropologiczny opis doświadczenia wycieczki po Kiberze, organizowanej przez jej mieszkańców, jako przestrzeni negocjacji znaczeń ubóstwa i tożsamości jej mieszkańców. Brałam udział w wycieczkach jako obserwatorka, prowadziłam wywiady - najczęściej swobodne, z osobami odwiedzającymi Kiberę, jak i z organizatorami wycieczek, a także przyglądałam się działalności tych ostatnich. Organizatorzy wycieczek chcą pokazać pozytywną stronę życia w Kiberze, czyli to, że jej mieszkańcy są na co dzień aktywni, pracowici i przedsiębiorczy, zmieniając tym samym percepcję tego miejsca u osób odwiedzających z dzielnicy ubóstwa w miasto możliwości. The aim of the article is to discuss the slum tours' experience in the countries of the Global South in view of the growing popularity of these tours among tourists from the Global North since the 1990s on the example of Kibera in Kenya. The paper is based on the ethnographic research which I conducted in the years 2014-2016 when I undertook an anthropological description of Kibera tour experience organized by its inhabitants as the area of negotiation of meanings of poverty and the (self-)identities of slum dwellers. The research included participant observation and interviewing the visitors as well as the slum tours' organizers. The tour guides declared that their aim was to show the positive side of daily life in Kibera, i.e. slum dwellers' pro-active attitude, their hard work and entrepreneurship. I argue that these qualities exhibited by the slum dwellers are the ones that eventually lead to the change of perception of this place. Namely, tourists from the Global North come to view the slum not so much as a poverty-stricken district, but as a city of opportunities. (original abstract)
