Abstrakty
Great Britain and England in particular, have expanded system of costal resorts whose scale and complexity is unmatched anywhere else in the world. They had played a central role in the development of tourism as a great international industry and in social and cultural transformation across the globe for more than two centuries. The popularity of holidays at the coast grew over the years as phenomenon until 1970s and 1980s when a combination of economic recession and competition from cheap foreign holidays put great stress on the resorts future and survival. Many British resorts visitors numbers fall, facilities decay and unemployment increase. The article explores history of British coastal resorts which were facing great social and cultural challenges and need to be restructured to adopt to new situation in economy, tourism and cultural preferences.
