This paper investigates the relationship between buffers (work in progress WIP) and system design. Two cases are considered; the first uses an average load rate for machines in each stage of production, the second case concerns the situation when all stations assigned to a given stage are fully loaded and the last machine if not fully loaded works at less than full capacity. An algorithm for designing production when buffers are restricted is also developed. (original abstract)
